TUITION: $981 per credit; $1,113 History of Decorative Arts

Elizabeth S. Paladino, Director of Admissions

Where better to study the many aspects of art and design than at a college within a major national art gallery? The Corcoran Gallery of Art, a privately funded institution, was founded in 1869 as Washington?s first and largest non-federal museum of art. It is known internationally for its distinguished collection of historical and modern American art as well as contemporary art, photography, European painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts. Founded in 1890, the Corcoran College of Art + Design is Washington?s only college of art and design offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across the spectrum of art mediums as well as art education, in a unique museum-college environment. Together, the museum-college partnership forms an educational experience unlike any other.

The cultural assets of Washington, D.C. are legendary. The many museums, galleries, and educational organizations assist in providing students with a high-quality academic, studio, and technical education. Key national treasures, architecture, and institutions, such as the Smithsonian Institution?the largest museum complex in the world?have helped to establish Washington as a one-of-a-kind urban center in which students study art, design, and history. The National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Kennedy Center, George Washington University, and Georgetown University, to name only a few, are all within walking distance of Corcoran?s downtown campus.

Located a block from the White House and steps away from the historic National Mall in the heart of the nation?s capital, the Corcoran is simultaneously one of America?s most distinguished museums and colleges of art and design. Students benefit from the renowned faculty and alumni of the College as well as the talented staff in the Gallery. The nation?s capital is a mecca of international activity, with more than 180 embassies and numerous multicultural organizations. The city is also a temporary home to 14,000 students from abroad who are studying at the more than 40 colleges and universities in the city of Washington, including the Corcoran.

Graduate programs at the Corcoran provide students with a rich, expansive academic curriculum grounded in real world experiences. Ranging across the disciplines of design, teaching, and art history, the Corcoran offers stimulating and creative opportunities for students to grow, learn, and ?master? the arts. With the combined resources of a college and a museum, few educational institutions can offer the Corcoran?s advantages. An integral part of the Corcoran graduate experience is the partnership between the College and the Corcoran Museum of Art. The Corcoran Museum-College partnership provides incomparable access to world-class collections, curators, exhibitions, distinguished visiting artists and public programs. Interacting with our outstanding curatorial staff, students learn about the Museum's diverse collection and how exhibitions are conceived and produced. Students have the opportunity to contribute to exhibition-related projects and learn from the Corcoran?s acclaimed permanent collection to enhance their creative experience.

Admission to the graduate programs is selective, yet Corcoran seeks students with a wide variety of academic and professional preparation. Applications are reviewed year-round on a rolling basis with a priority deadline of April 15 for the Fall semester and November 15 for the Spring semester.
