Florida International University - Miami's public research university - is one of America's most dynamic institutions of higher learning. FIU has more than 38,000 students, 1,100 full-time faculty, and 124,000 alumni, making it the largest university in South Florida and placing it among the nation's 25 largest colleges and universities. The University has two campuses ? University Park in western Miami-Dade County and the Biscayne Bay Campus in northeast Miami-Dade County -- and a presence in The Pines Center.
FIU emphasizes research as a major component of its mission and is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, the highest ranking in its classification system. Sponsored research funding from external sources was more than $92 million in 2005-06.
