SCI-Arc is a world-renowned center of innovation and one of the nation's few independent architecture school, offering undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs. We are dedicated to educating architects who will imagine and shape the future. The school is located in a quarter-mile long former freight depot in the Arts District of Los Angeles. It is distinguished by the vibrant atmosphere of its studios, which provides students with a uniquely inspiring environment in which to study architecture and design.
An integral part of the emerging cultural hub of a city with a tradition of architectural experimentation, SCI-Arc is devoted to finding radically new responses to the real needs and aspirations of today's world. We offer students a unique experience as they pursue their degrees. Our approximately 500 students and 80 faculty members—most of the latter practicing architects—work together in a fluid, non-hierarchical manner to re-think assumptions, create, explore and test the limits of architecture. SCI-Arc offers two distinct professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch) programs, M.Arch 1 and M.Arch 2, and four postgraduate Master’s degree programs within SCI-Arc Edge, specializing in Architectural Technologies, Fiction and Entertainment, Design of Cities, and Design Theory and Pedagogy. The three-year, seven-semester M. Arch 1 program is open to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any field of study. The M.Arch 1 program stresses excellence in design and provides students with a solid intellectual base of knowledge of the discipline, history, theory, technology, and professional practice of architecture. The two-year, five-semester M. Arch 2 program is open to applicants who hold an undergraduate degree in architecture.
The M.Arch 2 program is specifically geared to propel advanced design exploration and new modes of communication as it advances contemporary architectural experimentation and expands the boundaries of conventional architectural practice. Only students who have earned a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Architecture), a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Architecture), or a Bachelor of Architecture degree are eligible to apply for the M.Arch 2 program. Applicants who obtained their degrees outside of the United States are required to have their degrees officially evaluated to determine the equivalence of their education to the United States educational system. Applications for all graduate and postgraduate programs are accepted for the fall semester only. Successful applicants generally demonstrate a strong academic record, compelling letters of recommendation, and a portfolio of distinct work.
